The West Des Moines Community School District (WDMCS) kicked off the school year with a memorable and heartfelt surprise for their teachers.

During the district-wide welcome back meeting, just one day before school was set to start, the teachers of the district stunned their colleagues with an impressive flash mob performance.

To the surprise of everyone attending, a group of teachers performed a parody of “One Day More,” a popular song from the musical Les Miserables.

The spontaneous and vibrant display left their fellow educators in awe and created a sense of unity and excitement as they prepared for the school year ahead.

While Superintendent of WDMCS was in the middle of her welcome speech to the staff, the carefully coordinated flash mob unfolded seamlessly.

Teachers from across the district stood up one by one, singing their lines to the tune of Les Miserables, capturing the emotions of anticipation and preparation with just one day remaining before students would fill the halls.

What made the performance even more special was the commitment of the teachers involved. Despite having only a limited amount of free time in the summer, a group of dedicated teachers volunteered to come together for this surprise.

Over the course of June and July, they rehearsed tirelessly to ensure their performance was pitch-perfect. Out of the 12 participating music teachers, many others from different departments joined in, showcasing the broad talents of the WDMCS faculty.

Their dedication to the performance is a testament to their passion—not only for teaching, but for creating a supportive and uplifting school community.

The response from both teachers and the wider community was overwhelmingly positive.
