Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi sustained an injury during a congressional delegation trip to Luxembourg, where she was commemorating the 80th anniversary of the Battle of the Bulge.
Pelosi, 84, was admitted to the hospital for evaluation following the incident, as confirmed by her spokesperson, Ian Krager, on Friday.
“Speaker Emerita Pelosi is currently receiving excellent treatment from doctors and medical professionals,” Krager said in a statement.
“She continues to work and regrets that she is unable to attend the remainder of the [co-delegation’s] engagements to honor the courage of our service members during one of the greatest acts of American heroism in our nation’s history.”
The bipartisan delegation’s visit to Luxembourg highlighted the sacrifices made by American soldiers during the pivotal Battle of the Bulge in World War II.
This major conflict, which took place in the winter of 1944–1945, was a significant turning point in the war, marking one of the last major German offensives on the Western Front.
The delegation’s mission was to pay tribute to the courage of U.S. troops and foster continued ties with European allies who played an integral role in defeating Nazi forces.
Pelosi’s office did not disclose specific details about the nature of her injury or the circumstances surrounding the incident. However, her hospitalization led her to withdraw from the remaining activities planned as part of the delegation’s itinerary.
In her absence, Pelosi expressed gratitude for the opportunity to honor World War II veterans and reflect on their sacrifice.
Krager noted her appreciation for “the people of Luxembourg and Bastogne for their service in World War II and their role in bringing peace to Europe.”
The two locations are historically significant, with Bastogne being a critical site of resistance during the Battle of the Bulge.
Pelosi, who has served as a member of Congress since 1987 and held the position of House Speaker twice, remains a prominent figure in American politics.
The incident has prompted an outpouring of well-wishes for her recovery.
While Pelosi’s injury temporarily sidelined her, it did not diminish the importance of the delegation’s mission.
The Battle of the Bulge, fought 80 years ago, remains a symbol of American resilience and courage, and the commemorative trip serves as a reminder of the enduring bonds between the U.S. and its European allies.
As she recovers, Pelosi continues to work remotely, underscoring her resilience and dedication.
Her team has assured the public that she is receiving excellent medical care and remains engaged with her duties despite her injury.
